MaxioCel® Frequently Asked Questions

MaxioCel with Bioactive Microfiber Gelling (BMG) technology is a 100% chitosan-based gelling
fiber dressing and is used as a primary dressing to cover and manage moist chronic and acute
wounds.

Chitosan is a natural material derived from chitin, which makes up the endoskeleton or
exoskeleton of shellfish. It possesses unique properties, such as being cationic (positively
charged) and is biocompatible, which enables its use in various applications such as food
packaging, cosmetics, and wound care.

There have been no reported allergic reactions associated with chitosan-based dressings,
including MaxioCel. However, as a sensible precaution, MaxioCel is not recommended in
patients with known allergies to chitosan.

Bioactive Microfiber Gelling (BMG) is a unique gelling fiber technology that uses chitosan to
maintain a strong gel structure during exudate absorption and to support wound healing.

MaxioCel uses BMG technology to support wound healing and is made from 100% chitosan,
which has many benefits for wound care. These benefits include managing wound exudate,
locking in exudate, protecting wound edges, controlling bacteria, maintaining a clean wound
bed, and minimizing discomfort from the wound.

MaxioCel is indicated for use on moist wounds, including but not restricted to pressure
ulcers, diabetic ulcers, leg ulcers, donor sites, graft sites, surgical wounds, skin abrasions,
lacerations, and first- and second-degree burns.

Treatment with MaxioCel will continue until your healthcare provider (e.g., nurse, podiatrist or
doctor) assesses that treatment is no longer required.

MaxioCel can remain on the wound for up to 7 days, depending on clinical advice. The
frequency of dressing changes should be determined by the level of exudate at the wound site.
Always follow the instructions of your healthcare provider, such as a nurse, podiatrist, or doctor.

Cleanse the wound and follow local guidelines or advice from your healthcare provider. Apply
MaxioCel directly to the wound surface using an aseptic or clean technique. Please refer to the
Instructions for Use for detailed application guidelines.

If the MaxioCel dressing sticks, irrigate with sterile saline solution or water and remove it gently.
Refer to the Instructions for Use for detailed application and removal guidelines.

Yes, choose a secondary dressing suitable for the wound conditions, i.e., exudate levels and
wound location. If in doubt, speak to a healthcare provider such as a nurse, doctor, or
podiatrist.

Yes, MaxioCel can be folded, layered, or cut depending on the wound size, depth, and exudate
levels. However, it is not necessary to cut MaxioCel to fit the wound but always ensure a
minimum of 0.2 in overlap onto the healthy skin around the wound. Use a longer dressing for
cavity wounds (e.g., 1 in x 12 in size) based on the wound dimensions.

MaxioCel is made from 100% chitosan.

No, MaxioCel is for single use only. Once opened, any unused portion should be discarded.

Please refer to the Instructions for Use. MaxioCel should be stored at ambient room
temperature.
